Indulge your sense of smell


Whether you need a special pick-me-up to get you through a rough patch or simply want to elevate your mood during the mid-afternoon slump, certain scents are powerful mood boosters. I typically carry a small bottle of lime or orange oil with me. I’ve been known to pop open the bottle and take a whiff several times a day. At home, if feeling lost or disconnected, I’ve been known to smell my late grandmother’s perfume. It instantly takes me back to good times with family.

Of course, you can create new scent associations. In the last year or so, I’ve become quite the incense enthusiast. I’ve lit it so often during meditating that now, whenever the smoke permeates the air, I instantly feel calmer.

Take a moment to think about the scents that evoke your personal joy. Now, think about what you can do to incorporate this into your daily life. Perhaps you can purchase hand lotion in a special scent to keep in your desk drawer. Or maybe you need to start your day with a Wake’n Bacon alarm clock or a bunch of lavender. Whatever scent elevates your mood, zip out, grab it and keep it close.
