Rock Your Office Space

Perhaps you’re like many and spend a good portion of your life in an office.  Maybe you love your job. Perhaps you dream of escaping the cubicle nation. Whatever the case, consider taking a few steps to increase your quality of life and rock your work Zen by tweaking your office space.

I’ve learned some great tips from masters of comfort. One friend, who often found herself cold in her office environment, brought in multiple microwaveable heating pads, an incredibly soft throw and a very fashionable woolen throw. Aside from this, she had a drawer with a beautiful place setting of real dishes (not paper – although she had those too) and some favorite spices. As soon as she found herself with a smidge of extra space, she brought in a mini-fridge and stacked a microwave on it. All of a sudden, she found her workday filled with ice, sweet tea and favorite warm snacks. You can imagine how she was the envy of everyone who entered her office and saw her with a heating pad around her shoulders, soft blanket in her lap, hot wings by her mouse and iced tea in her glass.

I’ve seen others who keep favorite collections or team paraphernalia close by. I’ve even walked into an office that seemed more like a miniature Sasquatch museum including photos, framed articles, casts of footprints and more. For this salesman, it did more than make it feel at home, it got the conversation started.

However, I know some people like to be a tad more subtle, keeping a neutral office space. Perhaps splurging on some favorite office supplies is a good fit. You could look for pens that write smoothly and feel good in your hand. Perhaps colorful sticky notes, photos hung by fun tacks on a corkboard and favorite candy in desk drawer is more your speed. Whatever you choose, just remember, most of us spend more waking hours at our jobs than anywhere else. If this is the road you choose, make sure to make the trip as pleasant and as comfortable as possible.
